Palmyra Addition

A small extension to an old 60’s brick bungalow in the suburbs of Palmyra. The brief was to retain the existing brick dwelling and convert it into the private bedroom wing whilst adding a contemporary volume to the rear for kitchen/dining/living.

The new volume engages with the expansive rear yard, utilising the length of the block and opening up new pockets of landscape to be inhabited. To the north, a new entry courtyard planted out┬áto soften the building, to the west, a drying court and to the south, an entertaining courtyard. The design is ‘pinched’ at the south opening so the sense of compression as you move outside accentuates the scale of the large gum tree in the rear yard.

The material palette is very monochromatic. The intent here is to allow the vegetation surrounding the dwelling to pop out and liven the facades of the building whilst being framed from the inside.
